The boat story
My brother Marco planned this gathering himself, on a legal pad, in the hospital: good music, real food, and — his exact words — 'somebody better tell the boat story.' So. The boat story. In 1998, Marco bought a boat that did not, in any technical sense, float. He spent that whole summer in the driveway fixing it while the neighborhood came by to laugh — and stayed to help, because that was Marco's secret gift: his projects became everyone's projects. The boat launched in September. It carried three families' worth of kids around the lake for twenty years and never once sank, which is more than anyone predicted on day one. Marco wanted us together today, telling that story, laughing on purpose. Grief was not on his legal pad. Gratitude was — in capital letters, underlined twice. So look around, everybody. He built one more thing that floats.
Why it works: The person's own instructions license the warmth, and one well-told story does what a highlight reel of the whole life could not.
Customize it: Tell the one story the person themselves always wanted told, and say early that telling it was their wish.
